Bradford-Tioga Head Start, Inc. (BTHS) knows the  importance of teaching children to be safe, kind and responsible. BTHS has instituted PBIS (Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports) throughout the program. Children learn three main class rules: be safe, be kind and be responsible. Role-playing, modeling and curriculum extension activities support and help children learn how to be safe, be kind, and be responsible.

As part of this positive behavior support system, each classroom will be creating a "calm down area" where children can go and have the tools to redirect their attention in a positive manner.  Each child will determine when they need to go to the "calm down area" and will be taught how to use the tools.  The goal is that every child entering kindergarten will be prepared to understand that when he/she is angry there are positive ways to handle those emotions.

Obtaining more tools to support this positive intervention were needed and Bradford-Tioga Head Start, Inc. applied for a grant through the Marsha Kay Mase Foundation to purchase 18 weighted neck wrap/lap pads that can be used by preschoolers in the "calm down area."  The weighted lap pad/neck wraps are sensory tools that promote regulation, calming, and refocusing. The weight of the pad or pillow can be really calming and help some children focus.

Bradford-Tioga Head Start, Inc. was recently notified that they would be the recipient of $359.82 to purchase the neck wrap/lap pads. A HUGE thank you to the Marsha Kay Mase Foundation for their continuing support of Bradford-Tioga Head Start, Inc.
