Bradford-Tioga Head Start, Inc.’s East Smithfield 2 Classroom Completes Tree Study

Autumn. Fall. Whatever you call it, it’s the perfect time of year to study trees! Children enrolled in the East Smithfield 2 classroom of Bradford-Tioga Head Start, Inc. have been talking trees for weeks. During the study Miss Dyan, class teacher, had the children learning about the characteristics of trees, the animals that live in trees, food that comes from trees and even the people who take care of trees.

As the study concluded, teachers and classroom staff took the opportunity to review all they had learned using study boards and words. Better yet, they turned the review into a celebration of learning by participating in a song and dance from the book Chicka Chicka Boom Boom. Each child participated in making a craft, using their name climbing up a coconut tree. This was followed  by counting the letters in his/her name. And as if that weren’t enough the class even built a coconut tree! They used pretzels and cereal to build the roots, trunk, and branches. All of which, along with the fruit of an apple tree, made for a very tasty snack!

When asked about the lessons and the day, Miss Dyan said “The children had great fun participating in a study that is relevant, and Fall is the perfect time to look at trees in our community.”
