Bradford-Tioga Head Start, Inc. recently opened a new classroom at 382 Reuter Blvd in Towanda.  For the project to be truly complete, a playground will be constructed and that all begins with a tractor trailer load of woodchips!

For Head Start and PA Pre-K Counts programming, playground safety is regulated by the state and federal governments.  To achieve this level of safety, a playground must have 9 to 12 inches of woodchips under every potential fall zone.  In mid-February, Becker's School Supply will be installing a playground inside a fenced area that is sized just for 3 to 5 year old children.  In addition to the play structure, outdoor play equipment, such as tricycles, balls, and hoola hoops will be available for children to maximize their gross motor opportunities.

So to complete this big first step, Bradford-Tioga Head Start, Inc., partnered with Williams, one of North America’s leading natural gas companies with gathering, processing and transmission in critical basins and markets across the country. Why Williams?  Because they promote and encourage their staff to volunteer in the community.  Adam Weightman, Environmental-Specialist IV in the Permitting Department for Williams, coordinated a crew of Williams employees (Adam Hills, Scott Kinter, and Adam Weightman)  to shovel, rake, and spread woodchips at the Towanda Head Start site in preparation for the new playground that is scheduled to be installed in mid-February if the weather is appropriate.

Through a contact made by Adam, Cuz Excavating from Canton, owned by Dave Ward, also donated equipment and an operator to assist in the spreading of the woodchips.  Dave and employees Quay Ward and Justin Walker were all on site to assist in addition to Frank Bixler, Bradford-Tioga Head Start, Inc. Maintenance Staff.  "It is such a wonderful gift for Williams and Cuz Excavating to allow their employees to volunteer and to help us,” said BTHS, Inc. Executive Director, Jody Thomas. “They had the work done in about an hour and now we are ready to have the playground installed!"
