BTHS’s Knitters with a Purpose

When knitters are asked why they knit the answers are many. Some knit because it relaxes them and relieves their stress. Others knit for the pleasure of the creating – the mixing of yarns and colors; of designing something as they go along. And finally there are those knitters who knit with a purpose; to make something for a perfect stranger just because it warms their heart knowing that what they knit will help someone in need.

Those “knitters with a purpose” are the types that have been a part of the “Mittens from the Heart” program at Bradford-Tioga Head Start, Inc. for over 15 years! It all began when Jody Thomas created the project, Mittens From the Heart, as an outreach project for the community. The project continues to provide a way to engage people who knit, crochet, or sew with children who need mittens, a hat, or a scarf. For many years every child in the program has been provided with at least one item.

Once again, Bradford-Tioga Head Start, Inc. is reaching out to the community asking for donations of knitted mittens for children up to the age of five. If you or someone you know loves to knit, crochet, or sew and is interested in donating items to the children who attend Bradford-Tioga Head Start, Inc., you may call 570-638-1400. Donations may be dropped off at any Bradford-Tioga Head Start, Inc. classroom or at the Central Office at 5 Riverside Plaza, Blossburg. Just know, that like every good “knitter with a purpose” you will be providing items to children who might otherwise not have mittens, a hat, or a scarf.
