Students from the Pennsylvania College of Technology and an advocate from AmeriHealth Insurance recently visited the Mansfield classroom of Bradford-Tioga Head Start, Inc. to bring awareness of the importance of Dental Health starting at a young age. The presenters demonstrated the appropriate ways to brush your teeth and then allowed each of the students to practice while they observed their techniques.

The advocate from AmeriHealth brought in foods and talked about different food groups and how they affect your teeth. Due to the high knowledge of the different food groups already established in the classroom, the children were able to differentiate between the different types of food groups and explain why some foods are healthy for us and others are not.

Hands-on activities, like these, provide the children with the ability to use their visual, tactile, and auditory learning styles. “When we are planning an activity, we believe it is important to take into consideration the different learning style of each child”, said Mansfield teacher Kristin Post. “Each child needs to feel important”.

The Mansfield Head Start class has been exploring personal health and how different foods affect their bodies. This has also tied in well with what they have been investigating in the classroom during small and large group activities. “Including the students in activities helps to foster their sense of belonging in a community”, said Mrs. Post. “Plus it promotes positive behavior interactions throughout the classroom with their peers and other adults.
