East Smithfield 2 Head Start Class

Celebrates Earth Day

Children enrolled in the East Smithfield 2 classroom of Bradford-Tioga Head Start, Inc. recently celebrated Earth Day and they finished a study on insects – all on the same day! Teachers talked about the importance of taking care of our planet Earth so that the air, water, and food that we eat remain clean and make us strong and healthy. They also talked with the children about insects, the part that insects play in caring for the planet and why people should care for insects.

During April’s Parent Activity Day, the children got help from their families with making and decorating bug collectors to use at home. This will give them an opportunity to continue investigating and learning about the bugs around them. The children also made all-natural bird feeders out of recycled paper tubes - taking care of another one of Earth’s creatures.  And finally, children and families planted and watered sunflower seeds, in the hopes of watching them grow and then transplanting at a later time.

East Smithfield 2 Teacher, Dyan Rude, was pleased with how eager the children were to be responsible caretakers of the world in which they live.  “The day was enjoyed by all! The children love it that so many family members came to school and shared in their fun and learning.
