Head Start is a national program that aids in preparing young children, ages 3 to 5, for the academic and social expectations of school. In part, this is accomplished when educators create fun, engaging, educational lessons for enrolled children.

Over the past few weeks, children enrolled in the East Smithfield 1 classroom of Bradford-Tioga Head Start, Inc. have enjoyed this type of learning during their study of tubes and tunnels. One activity allowed the children to mix different colors of paint and apply that paint to construction paper using a cardboard tube.  This gives each child a chance to explore the tube while also giving them freedom of expression when they chose the paint color and were able to customize their masterpiece with glitter, sequins and other materials.

During this project, teachers also talked about the cause and effect of what they used and how it turned out. It used each student’s fine motor skills when they applied the paint and carefully set each sequin. But it also offered an opportunity to teach the children about responsibility. “Even though paint was everywhere”, said teacher Teresa Adams, “everyone was responsible and helped clean up when our painting was finished.” Kuddos to everyone involved!
