The Bradford-Tioga Head Start, Inc. Board of Directors celebrated the program's success with its Classroom Assessment Scoring System (CLASS®) at their recent BTHS Board meeting on February 26, 2018. At this meeting, the Board acknowledged and congratulated the staff for their superb accomplishments.

CLASS® is an observation instrument that assesses the quality of teacher-child interactions in center-based preschool classrooms. It includes three domains or categories of teacher-child interactions that support children's learning and development: Emotional Support, Classroom Organization, and Instructional Support. Within each domain are dimensions that capture more specific details about teachers' interactions with children.

Federal CLASS Observations were conducted in 15 of the 17 Bradford-Tioga Head Start, Inc. classrooms in March 2017.  Two Reviewers visited classrooms and conducted two (2)  20-minute observations in each classroom with a 15-minute break in between each observation.  The CLASS Reviewers looked at three domains and ten dimensions of the teacher-child interactions and measured those observed interactions on a 7-point scale. The scores from each CLASS observation were averaged across the program to result in one score for each dimension; individual Classroom CLASS scores are not shared.  The dimension scores are then used to produce a domain score.

The federal government recently released the 2017 Head Start National Scores and Bradford-Tioga Head Start, Inc. staff received scores that are in the highest 10% of the National scores. In the area of Emotional Support, the program achieved a 6.48 and the Nation's highest 10% score began at 6.48.  In Classroom Organization, the Nation's highest 10% score began at 6.33 and Bradford-Tioga Head Start, Inc. was rated a 6.5. The program achieved a 4.24 in Instructional Support and the Nation's highest 10% began at 3.65.  All Bradford-Tioga Head Start, Inc. CLASS scores met or exceeded the base of the 10% highest National scores.

Bradford-Tioga Head Start, Inc. and its Board of Directors would like to congratulate all of the classroom staff on their wonderful achievement! As Executive Director Jody Thomas said to staff in her congratulatory email, “This is very much a reflection of the work that you all do with children, families, and each other. You are awesome, once again!
