Wyalusing Head Start Children Attend Bernstein Bears Musical

The Wyalusing classroom of Bradford Tioga Head Start recently traveled to the Keystone Theater in Towanda for a Bradford County Regional Arts production of “The Bernstein Bears” musical. For some children it was their first time attending an event like this!

A visit to the theater can be a life-changing experience for young and old alike. It offers a unique kind of learning that not only touches the imagination but it can awaken their curiosity or ignite an artistic passion. This particular musical focused on a variety of Health, Safety and Social skills such as Stranger Danger, Germs, and Nutrition, as well as being Kind, Safe and Responsible. Classroom staff discuss these topics regularly with the students, but giving them an opportunity to see them played out on the stage is an exceptional resource that helps to link the topics to a fun experience. In addition, learning in a theater offers its own opportunities – both social and educational – by strengthening positive behaviors, learning about the theater and the musical as well as the ability to sit and watch a performance without distraction.

Watching a play can be a defining moment that a child will cherish for the rest of their life. They should be encouraged to remember the play; and how it made them feel to be in the theater. Hopefully, they will want to repeat it. For it really is more than just a play or a musical, it is a way to become open to learning and to continually awakening one’s curiosity!
