Community organizations are businesses, always in need of volunteers. Volunteers fill in the gaps that are sometimes left as budgets tighten and volunteers bring extra sets of hands, feet, ears and voices to lighten the load and enhance program opportunities. Thankfully, there a businesses who encourage their employees to be volunteers!

A volunteer opportunity recently became available when Repsol Oil and Gas USA, LLC Administrative Assistant Linda Bockus contacted Bradford Tioga Head Start, Inc. Executive Director Jody Thomas about Repsol’s interest in having their employees volunteer in our classrooms. “One area I shared with Linda was for volunteers to read to children. We are always looking for people to read!” stated Mrs. Thomas.

Classrooms were contacted to find out who would like to participate. Troy Head Start teachers Ashley Wesneski and Valerie Simpson both thought it was a wonderful idea, so Mrs. Thomas shared their information with Linda to coordinate the details. On June 6th, two Repsol employees, Deb and Lorri, arrived at the Troy center ready to read! “Both readers held the students' attention throughout each book”, said teacher Ashley Wesneski. “They were amazing readers; reading with a lot of expression, tone, and asking open-ended questions to the class.”

The Repsol volunteer readers provided a positive reading experience for the Troy 1 and 2 Head Start children. They showed them how much fun reading can be by getting them involved with the stories and being physically active. It was a phenomenal experience. We would like to say THANK YOU to REPSOL for making this possible.
