Bradford Tioga Head Start Celebrates Dr. Seuss

“A person’s a person, no matter how small,” Theodor Seuss Geisel (a.k.a. Dr. Seuss) said. “Children want the same things we want. To laugh, to be challenged, to be entertained and delighted.” Perhaps this is why on March 2nd, children of all ages and sizes celebrate Dr. Seuss’s birthday each year.

What makes Dr. Seuss a favorite? For over sixty years, Dr. Seuss has been making reading fun. Fun for kids to listen to and fun for adults to read! Through repetition and rhyme, Dr. Seuss' books not only have given us hours of pleasure reading with our kids, they have created nonsense rhymes and word repetitions that combine to create sentences that simply roll off our tongues. They give children and adults a reason to both be silly all the while assisting young children with the development of their language skills and preparing the way for them to learn to read easily and naturally, as they get older.

For children in the Mansfield 2 classroom of Bradford Tioga Head Start, Inc. celebrating Dr. Seuss was a weeklong event! They spent time reading books like, “My Many Colored Days”, “The Cat in the Hat”, “The Foot Book”, “Fox in Socks”, “One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish” and “Oh the THINKS you can think”. On the final day, everyone – children and staff alike – wore a silly hat, to laugh, to be entertained and to pay tribute to an author who lives on, inspiring generations of children to explore the joys of reading.
