Bradford Tioga Head Start, Inc. Teacher Receives Jan Carpenter Award

The LEN (Learning Early Network) Conference was recently held at the Sayre Theater. As part of the conference, the Jan Carpenter Award is presented to an early childhood (ages zero to 6) educator in the Bradford County region. The award is given in memory of Jan Carpenter a wonderful person and outstanding teacher, who gave everything in her power to children in the Bradford County Daycare System for many years. The nominee selected as the winner receives their name on the Jan Carpenter Plaque, which is on public display; a winnerís plaque for personal use; $50 Valley gift certificate from the family of Jan Carpenter; and recognition at the Learning Early Conference before the Keynote address.

This yearís recipient is Mary Wickman, a Bradford Tioga Head Start, Inc. teacher in Blossburg, PA. Mary has been an employee of Bradford Tioga Head Start for 24 years. She began as a teacher aide, achieved her CDA and then obtained her Associates degree to move into a Teacher position within the program. A priority to Mary has been to embrace every opportunity to gain the newest information regarding Early Childhood Education teaching practices. Her dedication and passion for education is evident when you enter her classroom.

Maryís classroom is a bright, happy place, where the children are eager to learn. This is truly due to Maryís ability to set up an atmosphere where the children are comfortable and take ownership in their classroom and learning. Mary includes them in a lot of planning - from what they would like to learn, the materials they need, to what it will take to accomplish their goals. Mary is a warm, caring person, and the children learn respect as well as form a bond with her very quickly.

Mary is intentional in welcoming the community into her classroom and reaching out to keep Bradford Tioga Head Start, Inc. in the spotlight.  She has been a definite asset to the program. The children and families she has worked with over the years have been very blessed to be in her care. Bradford Tioga Head Start, Inc. is privileged to have Mary as a part of the team. Congratulations Mary Wickman on this great honor!
