Athens Center Gets New Playground Equipment

The Bradford-Tioga Head Start, Inc. children enrolled in the Athens 1 & 2 center watched out the windows, as the crew tore down the old playground equipment. What was happening to the slide, swings and ladders that they all loved? Little did they know that a BIG surprise was coming soon!

During the week leading up to the playground replacement, the children were studying buildings. Teaching staff talked with the children about the different types of materials used in construction and about how sometimes, old buildings need to be torn down to make room for a new building. “Watching the construction phases of taking down the old and putting together the new playground equipment really enhanced their knowledge of using different materials”, said Athens 1 teacher Kate Place. “The children really enjoyed the whole construction process.

In addition to watching the construction crew, Head Start staff and children took a walk to Valley Playland. They took pictures throughout the weeklong process and plan on making class books about the whole experience. Finally, at the end of the week the children got their surprise! A new playground stood where the old one had been! It didn’t take long before they were exploring and playing on the new equipment and making it their own!
